Cherry picking

Scorers: Christie 70′, Kluivert (PEN) 29′

Second half goals from Ryan Christie and Justin Kluivert were enough to see Bournemouth beat 10-man Arsenal.

The hosts started the game in impressive fashion and stopped Arsenal from gaining any sort of attacking momentum with Kai Havertz looking like a frustrated figure up top.

Things got more difficult for Arsenal on the half hour mark as William Saliba was sent off after denying a goal-scoring opportunity to Evanilson.

Andoni Iraloa’s men couldn’t make the most of that man advantage though, as the score remained goalless heading into the break.

After the break Bournemouth had a golden chance to take the lead but Antoine Semenyo’s first time effort from inside the area went wildly over the bar.

Other than that though, Arsenal looked relatively comfortable against the 11 men without ever really creating too much themselves.

Bournemouth’s player advantage eventually did tell however, as Ryan Christie found space inside the area and finished brilliantly from a corner.

The hosts then had a chance to double their lead with 10 minutes to go as Evanilson was tripped inside the area by David Raya. And that was a chance they took as Justin Kluivert converted.

Keane wonderstrike

Scorers: Ndiaye 17′, Keane 40′

Everton put distance between themselves and Ipswich in the table with a 2-0 win at Portman Road.

The start of the contest was delayed by 15 minutes due to a power issue and when it did get underway, it appeared Ipswich weren’t ready for the new kick-off time as some disastrously generous defending gifted Iliman Ndiaye the ball to open the scoring.

Five minutes before half-time, Ipswich again failed to clear their lines, allowing Michael Keane to thrash high into the net from a difficult angle with a finish a striker would be proud of to double the Toffees’ lead.

Man Utd pull off big comeback win

Scorers: Garnacho 47′, Højlund 63′; Pinnock 45+4′

Manchester United eased the pressure on Erik ten Hag as an inspired second half performance saw them come from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford.

After an entertaining opening 45 minutes that saw Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho, Kevin Schade and Christian Nørgaard all going close, Brentford took the lead deep into stoppage time, in somewhat contentious circumstances.

United’s bench were furious that Matthijs de Ligt was not permitted to return to the field of play in time to defend a corner after going off to receive treatment when a forehead cut reopened and from the Mikkel Damsgaard delivery, Ethan Pinnock opened the scoring.

Whatever Ten Hag said to his side in the dressing room, it had the desired effect as United equalised within 90 seconds thanks to a superb Garnacho volley from Marcus Rashford’s cross before taking the lead 15 minutes later thanks to a cool Rasmus Højlund finish.

United move into the top half with the win, while the Bees stay 12th.

Fulham pay the penalty against Villa

Scorers: Jiménez 5′; Rogers 9′, Watkins 59′ Diop OG 69′

Fulham snatched the early advantage when a hopeful Bernd Leno punt was pounced upon by Raúl Jiménez who capitalised on Pau Torres’ uncertainty to race clear and fire his side in front.

That lead lasted just four minutes before the in-form Morgan Rogers restored parity from 25 yards as his strike wrong-footed Leno with the aid of a huge deflection.

Fulham then had the chance to retake the lead after a controversial penalty award for a close-range handball but Emiliano Martínez did what he so often does from 12 yards and saved Andreas Pereira’s weak effort.

And on that moment the game turned as Ollie Watkins got the goal his efforts deserved by brilliantly heading Youri Tielemans’ cross in at the near post on the hour mark to send the Villans in front.

Villa’s task in seeing things out was then given a big helping hand by two Fulham centre-backs as firstly Joachim Andersen was sent off before Issa Diop put through his own goal.

Victory sees Villa keep their top four berth, with the only blot on their copybook being a soft second yellow card for substitute Jaden Philogene in injury-time.

Seagulls soar in Newcastle

Scorers: Welbeck 35′

Brighton’s impressive start under Fabian Hürzeler continued as a lone Danny Welbeck fired them to a 1-0 win at Newcastle.

After an entertaining opening 35 minutes with chances for both sides, Welbeck continued his purple patch to grab his fifth of the season and the game’s only goal when he played a simple one-two to cut Newcastle open before finding the net.

Newcastle missed a series of gilt-edged openings in their search for an equaliser which didn’t come as they stay eighth with the loss, as the Seagulls move into the top five.

Southampton capitulate in thriller

Scorers: Archer 8′, Aribo 28′; Buonanotte 65′, Vardy (PEN) 74′, Ayew 90+8′

Southampton blew a huge chance for their first win of the season as they somehow surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Leicester City at St Mary’s.

An under pressure Russell Martin’s side came close to a very quick opener through Joe Aribo, who was agonisingly denied by the woodwork but quickly got the goal their early efforts merited when Cameron Archer tapped in from close range after Leicester failed to put any pressure on the ball and paid the price.

Having earlier been kept out by the bar, Aribo made no mistake when another chance presented itself to double Saints’ lead, again turning home after being teed up by a cross from the left.

Leicester did almost pull one back before the break but Bilal El Khannouss’ curling strike hit the post before they did reduce the arrears after the restart when Abdul Fatawu cut back for Facundo Buonanotte to score.

Fatawu was then denied a goal of his own by the underside of the crossbar but the Foxes wouldn’t be denied and got their leveller through a Jamie Vardy penalty, which saw RyanFraser sent off for his part in giving it away.

The drama wasn’t done there and Leicester won it in the eighth minute of injury-time through Jordan Ayew after a clever corner found him on the edge of the area to send the away end into delirium.

Spurs rally to swat West Ham aside

Scorers: Kulusevski 36′, Bissouma 52′, Areola OG 55′, Son 60′; Kudus 18′

Tottenham put on a scintillating second half performance to blow an insipid West Ham side away with a 4-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

It was West Ham who actually took the lead on 18 minutes when Jarrod Bowen beat Destiny Udogie too easily and picked out Mohammed Kudus at the back post to convert.

A deflected Pedro Porro strike came close to squirming beyond Alphonse Areola but the West Ham goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to keep the ball out, only to be beaten moments later when he couldn’t get a strong enough hand to Dejan Kulusevski’s low strike which found the net with the help of both posts.

Seven minutes into the second half, the Spurs surge began when Udogie cut back for an onrushing Yves Bissouma to score and things quickly got even better when Jear-Clair Todibo bundled into his own net via Areola, who parried a Son effort onto his compatriot, with the goalkeeper ultimately credited with an unwanted own goal.

The Spurs skipper got in on the act for himself on the hour mark when he beat the offside trap before rifling in at the near post following a series of rapid-fire stepovers – and almost added a swift second only for the post to deny him.

In the closing stages, West Ham’s frustrations boiled over when Kudus was sent off following a VAR check after an altercation which saw him strike two Tottenham players in the face and end the game on a miserable note for his side.
