While bottom of the table St Johnstone and dreadful form Aberdeen are hardly the toughest opponent that Rangers will face this season and nevertheless the rise of young Clinton Nsiala is beginning to show echoes of a certain Calvin Bassey.
While we would never judge the young man at this point given league wise there is little to play for anymore and it does also resemble the rise of Chris Burke during the dying embers of Eck’s regime, it is still impressive to watch a young player shining at this level.
The young Frenchman was only intended for the B team and thanks to injury and suspension in defence found himself thrust into the spotlight.
And it must be said has done little wrong indeed showing some outstanding distribution and threading some excellent passes not to mention an assist.
Do not forget where this lad came from – Italian giants AC Milan have a pretty darn good youth Academy called the primavera and they very much wanted this lad to remain there.
The defender was offered a contract to remain in Milanello but rejected it in favour of trying his chances elsewhere and obviously he chose Rangers.
He has had to wait his chance and most often young players tend to shine when given an unexpected chance – Nathan Patterson is a great example of when injury blighted James Tavernier.
Unfortunately, Leon King is an example of when it didn’t quite work out under the same type of circumstance.
But Clinton is looking promising for Rangers and while he has only sparkled against admittedly bad opposition nevertheless for a young player to immediately step into the first team and do this well is encouraging.
His market value when Rangers signed him was only €72,000, we suspect that has somewhat increased now even if he is not quite a megastar just yet.
As bad as this season has been for Rangers in the past month himself and Hamza are examples of some of the scouting which initially looked bad but has maybe started to yield results.
The problem was of course that we needed instant success not individuals shining seven months later and into that end the transfer window was a disaster.
But the positive is definitely there with Clinton, the big problem being he may not be available for either of the final Europa league matches given he wasn’t included in the senior squad.
Whether he can be called up as a youth product as an alternative player given the half of our injured defenders are unavailable we are also unsure.
Either way, though he is proving to be handling the step up. Long may it continue.
