Manchester United have had an average start to the campaign and they have picked up only 11 points in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have not fared better in the Europa League either with just three points from as many games.

Despite this, there have been some positives and the form of Christian Eriksen has come as a pleasant surprise.

The 32-year-old was a fringe player under manager Erik ten Hag last term with one goal and three assists from 28 outings.

However, he has already surpassed that tally with four goals and three assists from 10 appearances.

Eriksen has yet to make a goal contribution in the league, but he has been crucial to every point picked up in Europe.

The Dane scored the opening goal versus Twente with a splendid first-time shot.

He registered two assists during the 3-3 draw versus Porto. One of those was for Harry Maguire’s late equaliser.

Eriksen opened the scoring at Fenerbahce with a fine long-range shot, but United were unable to hold on to the lead.

In our view, those involvements in the Europa League have probably kept Ten Hag in the job.

Without Eriksen, United would have lost each of those games, paving the way for the Dutchman’s dismissal.

Over the summer, the midfielder was heavily linked with an exit with interest from Ajax.

A number of clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia were also keen on the experienced ace, but he opted to stay put.

Eriksen’s contract expires at the end of the season, but as things stand, the club have no plans of extending his stay.

His form has forced United’s executives to pause for thought and their stance could be reconsidered if he continues to impress.

Eriksen has averaged 2.7 key passes per outing this term and he seems undroppable under Ten Hag at the present point.

With Bruno Fernandes yet to find consistency this season, Ten Hag could persist with Eriksen in midfield due to his creative presence.
