Attention has turned to the Club World Cup, which kicked off last night, but while we start to focus on winning that trophy, there’s plenty of work being done behind the scenes on building our squad.

Our failure to sign Dean Huijsen means that centre back remains a position where we need to strengthen, and a report from The Club World Cup is about to kick off, meaning a deluge of content on all sides, including this nice piece on the Chelsea official website. over the weekend has claimed that we’re still interested in a very long term target.

We’ve been linked with Marc Guehi almost since the day he left us to join Crystal Palace, but it’s only now that the rumours are getting really convincing.

Palace have been asking crazy money for the defender in the last few windows, reportedly rejecting a £70m bid from Tottenham in January. But the equation is changing as Guehi enters the last year of his contract.

This piece claims that Chelsea will look to sneak in a low-ball offer after the Club World Cup finishes, knowing that Palace will start to be fearful of losing their captain on a free in a year’s time.

Defenders can still change Chelsea plans with strong showings

The exclusive claims that the priority now is playing the CWC and then signing another striker, but also that 24 year old Guehi is going to be heavily targeted in July once everything has settled down a little.

In the meantime, the likes of Tosin Adarabioyo and new man Mamadou Sarr have the chance to impress Enzo Maresca by performing well in the USA. Even Trevoh Chalobah can prove his worth, and potentially convince the sporting directors they don’t need to bring in another defender.
