Chelsea got pretty lucky through the first part of the season in terms of injuries – but that luck has now very much run out.
The Blues are going to be without Wesley Fofana until the end of the season, and Benoit Badiashile will join him on the sidelines until February at least. That’s led to some speculation about buying players this month – or perhaps even recalling some players the club already own who are out on loan.
We’ve already had it confirmed by the club that young Aaron Anselmino will be coming to the UK this month now that his time with Boca Juniors is over. He could yet be sent out elsewhere on a loan – perhaps to a European team – but first Enzo Maresca wants to know him a little better up close.

Apart from him, things look pretty thin on the recall front. Bobby Vincent of Football.London says that neither Trevoh Chalobah nor Alfie Gilchrist can be recalled from their loans. Meanwhile Bashir Humphreys already has a deal in place to join Burnley permanently in the summer at the conclusion of his loan, so that’s not an option either.
So that rules all 3 of those academy starlets out from making a return to Stamford Bridge this month. That could tempt the club to go into the market, but as we wrote yesterday, that will likely only be decided once they feel they’ve got a handle on what Anselmino offers them.
Chalobah in particular proved himself to be a great defender in many appearances for us, and you won’t find many Chelsea fans who wouldn’t rather have him in the squad than Axel Disasi, for example.
