A look at three players who Leicester City should immediately target if Danny Rohl is appointed at the King Power Stadium.
Leicester City are preparing for their return to the Championship and the Foxes will be scouring the market to construct a squad capable of immediately challenging for promotion back to the Premier League.
It has been announced that Ruud van Nistelrooy, who oversaw Leicester’s relegation from the top-flight, has departed the club, with it being reported that Danny Rohl is a key target for the Foxes.
36-year-old Rohl took charge of a struggling Sheffield Wednesday side in the first-half of the 2023/24 campaign, and he eventually led the Owls to safety relatively comfortably before overseeing another mid-table finish at a turbulent club last season.
It will likely be a bit of a chaotic summer transfer window in terms of comings and goings, but Football League World has identified three players that should be targeted by Leicester from the off this summer.
A lot will depend on what Leicester’s budget will be this summer but, with parachute payments and saving money on Jamie Vardy’s wages, as well as the rumoured sale of Bilal El Khannouss, they should have enough to tempt Norwich City into the sale of one of their stars.
It is expected that Borja Sainz will depart Carrow Road this summer, with the Spaniard linked with a move away to Athletic Club, and CEO Ben Knapper has said he expects interest in Sargent.
Replacing the goals of Vardy will be imperative for Leicester this summer and Sargent offers a threat in front of goal, as well as an all-round ability that would appear ideally suited to Rohl's style of football.
The United States international initially struggled in England when he joined them in the Premier League, but the former Werder Bremen forward has very much improved in terms of his efficiency, whilst also being able to mix things up.
If Rohl arrives at Leicester, he would be likely to play a 4-2-3-1 system, which would ideally suit Sargent, who thrived in that system at Norwich this season. Having both come through the German system, too, there will likely be a tactical understanding, with Sargent an expert presser, and Rohl keen to play with a high-intensity, high-energy style.
It would be an ambitious move by City but, at 25, Sargent has already marked himself out as one of the best strikers in the league and doesn't seem too far away from hitting big 20 or 25+ numbers.
Koleosho joined Burnley under the management of Vincent Kompany and became a key man in the Premier League for the Clarets before injuries hampered his 2023/24 season, and the start of the 2024/25 Championship campaign.
Scott Parker is likely to bring in more players at Turf Moor and, with a stacked squad in terms of numbers in the final third of the pitch, Koleosho may be starved of regular first-team football.
As a result, it would be a brilliant opportunity to pounce on the Italy U21 international and bring him in to the King Power Stadium to provide some speed and dynamism to their creative ranks, which have been diminished due to Facundo Buonanotte returning to his parent club and could be further hit by the possible departure of El Khannouss.
When he arrived from Espanyol, Koleosho was always expected to be on the fringes of Burnley's side initially, but it didn't take him too long to get into the eleven and become one of their more exciting and entertaining players.
Able to beat a man with relative ease, albeit a criticism would be that he tends to want to then go back and beat the man again. Koleosho had mainly been viewed as a winger, but then got moved inside to play as a second striker in a 4-4-2.
At the UEFA U21 European Championships this summer, he played as one of two tens for Italy in a 3-4-2-1 shape and his versatility and electricity in attack will be something Rohl will be keen on his incoming players possessing.
If Rohl were to play his 4-2-3-1, then Koleosho's versatility is excellent for that, as it could see him play on either flank as well as even in a number ten role if Leicester opt for a more counter-attacking style on a game-by-game basis, which is something Rohl is good at in terms of his pragmatic choices.
The Arsenal goalkeeper spent the last season on loan at Real Valladolid as they were relegated from the top-flight but an injury in the second-half of the campaign meant he missed much of their humiliating demotion.
The Estonia international has been linked with Portsmouth, Preston North End and Queens Park Rangers this summer as clubs seek to stock their keeping ranks.
All three of those sides, as well as Leicester, have a well-established and impressive number one, but he is more than strong enough cover and, what is more crucial in Leicester’s situation, is the possible departure of Mads Hermansen.
Hermansen has been linked with both Manchester United and West Ham United so, with his future in doubt, Leicester securing a financially enticing deal for a goalkeeper who would be number two to start off with but could easily transition into being first-choice would appear a good move.
Hein would bring in a level of experience perhaps unexpected for a 23-year-old with 37 international caps and now a full season playing top-flight football in a major European league, as well as having already played in the EFL with Reading back in 2022.
Hein's distribution is something that has been talked about a lot, once completing every single pass in a game against Leganes last season, with a lot of those passes in that game actually being more direct, long balls.
That ability to build out from the back, whether it by being direct and in transition, or beginning the attack with short passing from the back, is something that Rohl will be keen on based on his time at Hillsborough with Wednesday.
