Liverpool know who they want to replace Mo Salah on the right this season. They've got a 30-goal star in mind.

Mo Salah is one of the absolute greatest players in Liverpool's history but there is a consistent problem they face with him in the team: AFCON. The Egyptian does disappear every other year or so in order to play for Egypt.

It's a problem with African players, of course, that doesn't exist with players from other federations. If you have a great African player, you'll be without him for a month as he goes off to play at an intense level.

Now, Liverpool have typically handled this well. The 2019 AFCON took place during the summer, thankfully, while the (delayed) 2022 tournament and 2023 tournament didn't see massive drop-offs.

That's despite the squad never actually having a proper backup player to Salah, too. They've always just shifted a few players about and made it work.

This time around, though, they do appear to have a strategy in mind. And it means taking advantage of a new signing.

Liverpool to use Jeremie Frimpong

The Athletic reports that Liverpool view Jeremie Frimpong as a replacement for Salah during AFCON. The Dutchman joined the Reds ahead of this season.

Now, Frimpong signed primarily as a right-back, directly taking Trent Alexander-Arnold's spot in the squad. But he was actually more of a wing-back at Bayer Leverkusen, with far more emphasis put on attacking than defending.

That's something Liverpool want to take advantage of. After all, Frimpong scored 30 times for Leverkusen in his time there - he knows how to be a genuine threat on the flank.
