Jimmy Quinn scored

ONE – SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 1905 – Celtic travel to Edinburgh to beat Hibs 1-0 before 12,000 fans, the goal almost inevitably coming from Jimmy Quinn. Celtic have now played five games in December, won them all and have not even conceded a goal. Little wonder that the trains going back to Glasgow tonight are full of happy Celtic supporters.

Joe Cassidy scored twice

TWO – SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 1922 – Raith Rovers’ curious L shaped stand (still in use today) is opened when Celtic come to Stark’s Park. Raith Rovers have great players like Alec James, Davie Morris and Will Collier but today they are swept aside by a great Celtic performance. Johnny Gilchrist scores one goal and Joe Cassidy the other two in a 3-0 victory.

John McAlindon scored twice

THREE – SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 1950 – John McAlindon scores twice for Celtic today as Celtic and Hearts fight out an honourable 2-2 draw at Celtic Park before a large crowd of 40,000. Jimmy Wardhaugh and Willie Bauld score for the Edinburgh men but the best player on the field is Celtic’s Charlie Tully.

FOUR – SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 1989 – The decade of the 1980s comes to an awful end with a dreadful 0-2 home defeat to Jim Leishman’s Dunfermline. The lack of creative play is woeful, and it is a matter of some mystery why a team with players like Roy Aitken and Paul McStay can be so poor. Dariusz Dziekanowski, in whom so much was invested, continues to disappoint.

Derek Riordan scored

FIVE – SATURDAY 30 DECEMBER 2006 – A profoundly heart breaking last minute equaliser for Motherwell sees manager Gordon Strachan vent his frustration on a water bottle, but it is a frustration shared by many supporters because Celtic really should have put this game to bed after Derek Riordan scored his first goal for the club, and then the defence failed to cope with the late pressure of Motherwell.
