Personnel matters

Head coach Markus Högner made two changes to his starting line-up from the home win against FSV Gütersloh. After a three-match absence due to a thigh injury, Marina Scholz returned and replaced Jasmin Jabbes on the right wing. The second change also involved the right flank as Mia Böger came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Jenske Steenwijk.

The match

Both teams started the match energetically and looked to push forward early on. With temperatures hovering just below 30 degrees, Dortmund created the first chances through the lively Rita Schumacher (5th and 6th minutes). The hosts ceded possession to BVB for long periods and relied on aggressive pressing from the halfway line.

The Black & Yellows posed a constant threat, particularly down the right flank. A cross from Mia Böger hit the crossbar (13), and shortly afterwards a cross from Marina Scholz was cleared at the last second (15). In the 19th minute, BVB deservedly took the lead as Noreen Günnewig pressed determinedly in the penalty area and cut the ball back from the byline to Annika Enderle, who slotted home from close range to make it 1-0. It was also the BVB women’s 100th goal of the season in their 25th match.

In the closing stages of the first half, the Borussia women continued to create chances but initially managed only a few clear-cut opportunities. Enderle narrowly missed the target with a long-range shot (32), before Rita Schumacher made it 2-0 with a fine solo run. After winning the ball on the edge of the Essen penalty area, Dortmund’s top scorer delicately slotted the ball into the far corner (35).

With the lead established, BVB gradually took control and pushed for a third goal. At the same time, Laura van der Laan was on hand to make a superb save to prevent the opposition from getting a goal back. The teams went into the break with the score at 2-0 after a long period of added time.

A brace to seal the victory

After the restart, the BVB women defended the hosts’ early set-pieces resolutely and created further chances on the break. As the match progressed, the action shifted increasingly into Essen’s half.

The third goal came in the 69th minute as Sara Ito won the ball and launched the next counter-attack through Rita Schumacher. Ronja Leubner’s shot was initially blocked, but Celina Baum, who had come on as a substitute shortly before, pounced on the rebound to score.

Just three minutes later, the roles were reversed as Baum sent Leubner through, and she finished under pressure to make it 4-0.

The travelling BVB fans were able to cheer again shortly afterwards. Following a free-kick from Melanie Schuster, Frederike Kempe headed the ball down to Ronja Leubner, who scored from close range to make it 5-0 (83).

In the closing stages, the Black & Yellows stepped up another gear. Following assists from Jasmin Jabbes and Willeke, Leubner scored twice in the 91st and 92nd minutes to complete a hat-trick and seal a 7-0 victory. Despite the high temperatures, the BVB women kept their cool right until the end and earned their reward for a focused and consistent performance with a convincing away win.

In the other match, 1. FC Köln’s U21s also won, so they maintained their two-point lead at the top of the table. On the final matchday, BVB can seal their spot in the promotion playoffs if they win their match and the Cologne side draw.

End of the season at the Rote Erde Stadium

On the final matchday of the Regionalliga West, the Black & Yellows will host Vorwärts Spoho Köln at the Rote Erde Stadium. Kick-off against the Cologne side is on Sunday (31 May) at 13:00 CEST.
