Manchester City picked up a huge 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday to move within three points of Mikel Arteta’s side at the top of the Premier League table. Pep Guardiola’s side do have a game in hand on the Gunners and have built up real momentum for the run-in in their past four matches. Sunday’s match was a classic, as both teams went for the win and City emerged victorious. There was only one concern to emerge from a Manchester City point of view. That surrounded Rodri. Manchester City’s midfield general was taken off with a groin injury late in the second half against Arsenal. His fitness is now a major story to monitor ahead of Manchester City’s upcoming Premier League fixture against Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
Speaking after his team beat Arsenal, Pep Guardiola provided an update on the injury Rodri picked up. Rodri was replaced by Nico in the 88th minute of Sunday’s match. The Manchester City manager revealed that Rodri had picked up what seemed to be a groin injury. Speaking on Rodri’s injury, Pep Guardiola said: “I don’t know how long Rodri will be out. It’s the groin I think the doctor said but we will see. We will make a test tonight or tomorrow.”
Manchester City will be hoping that the groin injury sustained by Rodri isn’t serious. The Spanish international has rediscovered his best form, and he has played a vital role in Manchester City’s recent run of impressive form. Rodri was superb in midfield during the second half of Manchester City’s win over Arsenal. Alongside Bernardo Silva, he helped City take control of the midfield throughout the second half. Given Rodri’s importance to Pep Guardiola’s side, they will not take any risks with his fitness. If Rodri cannot take part in Manchester City’s upcoming match against Burnley, City does have cover for him.
Nico came on for Rodri at the Etihad, and he is Rodri’s replacement if the Spanish midfielder cannot play against Burnley or in Manchester City’s upcoming FA Cup semi-final against Southampton. Nico’s improvement this season has seen him take his game up a level this season, and he was superb in Rodri’s absence earlier this season. Nico will have an important role to play for City if Rodri is forced to miss any of City’s upcoming matches.
Manchester City will be sweating on Rodri’s fitness following the groin injury he sustained against Arsenal. It remains to be seen how long Rodri could be sidelined for. But City does have cover in Nico if Rodri’s groin injury forces him to miss any matches.
