Jeremy Doku has made a slow start to the 25/26 season for Manchester City. Doku started Manchester City’s 4-nil win over Wolves on the opening weekend of the season. The Belgian international wasn’t at his best at Molineux before being substituted. He then came off the bench in the second half of his team’s defeats to Tottenham and Brighton. On both occasions, Doku couldn’t affect the game.

Heading into the international break, it seemed like Doku needed to find some form with his country. Last night, Doku played a key role in Belgium’s 6-nil win over Kazakhstan. The hope is that his strong performance for his country can carry over to his club when Manchester City returns to action this weekend.

Jeremy Doku starred for Belgium as they hammered Kazakhstan.

As Belgium beat Kazakhstan 6-nil last night, Jeremy Doku put in a stunning display. He scored a brace and put in a lively performance in his country’s emphatic World Cup qualifier win. The fact he scored twice should fill the dynamic winger with confidence. But the manner of his performance was exactly what he needed.

Jeremy Doku started on the right wing for Belgium against Kazakhstan. He was also allowed to drift centrally on occasions. Playing in this role allowed Doku to play to his strengths. He tormented the Kazakhstan defence as playing on the right wing and drifting into dangerous areas in the final third of the pitch allowed Doku to play a prominent role for Belgium. His trickery and speed made him almost unplayable against the Kazakhstan defence. After half an hour of Belgium’s win, Doku switched onto the left wing and put in a typical Doku display on the left. Both of his goals were well deserved, and the hope is that Jeremy Doku can carry the confidence he would’ve gained last night into Manchester City’s upcoming matches.

Manchester City will be hoping that Jeremy Doku returns to the club full of confidence.

Pep Guardiola’s side needs Jeremy Doku to fire when Manchester City return to action this weekend. City take on Manchester United at the Etihad this Sunday. They will be hoping to bounce back from consecutive defeats in the Premier League in the Manchester derby. Following the derby, City take on Napoli and Arsenal. To get through the next three fixtures, Pep Guardiola’s side will need their players to return to their best. Doku’s performance last night does give the impression that he is close to rediscovering his form.

When he is firing, Jeremy Doku is a game-changer. His ability to beat a man with his dribbling ability and speed makes him a dangerous proposition for City’s opponents. The frustration with Doku is that his end product can be lacking. But last night, he showed that when he gets that part of his game right, he can be devastating.

Manchester City and Jeremy Doku will face tougher tests than the Kazakhstan defence. But last night’s strong performance for his country should fill Doku with confidence. Hopefully, he brings that form back with him to his club as they embark on a tough three game stretch starting this weekend.
