The scenario: The fourth-placed team faces the fifteenth-placed team. Borussia Dortmund have lost just one of their last 16 Bundesliga matches – away to Bayern Munich (2-1). After eight matchdays, BVB have four more points (17) than they did at the same point last season. Augsburg have suffered five defeats – more than ever before at this stage of the season.
Home & away: FCA have lost three of their four home games so far, only picking up points in their 3-1 win against Wolfsburg. BVB are the fourth-best away team with two wins (in Heidenheim and Mainz), one draw (St. Pauli) and one defeat (Munich), giving them a positive record.
Head-to-head: BVB lost both games against Augsburg last season (1-0 at home, 2-1 away), having lost only three of the previous 28 encounters. Borussia have scored at least three goals in 14 of the 28 encounters and have not scored as many goals on average against any other club (2.4). Augsburg have lost five times after taking a 1-0 lead in this fixture – more than any other club.
Statistics: Although FC Augsburg failed to score for the first time this season in their recent match against Leipzig, their total of 12 goals is only two fewer than Borussia Dortmund (14). FCA's five goals from crosses in open play are more than any other team in the Bundesliga; BVB have also scored four goals in this manner. The Black & Yellows have yet to concede a goal from a cross. After their clear defeat against Leipzig, Augsburg have the worst defensive record in the Bundesliga, with 20 goals conceded. Dortmund, on the other hand, have only conceded six goals, with only Bayern conceding fewer. If BVB keep another clean sheet in Augsburg, six goals conceded after nine matchdays would be their lowest tally in 23 years.
Last season: Donyell Malen gave the Black & Yellows an early lead (4), but the goal spurred the hosts on. They equalised through Alexis Claude-Maurice after 25 minutes, took a 2-1 lead after his second goal in the 50th minute and held on to their lead until the final whistle. In the final quarter of an hour, BVB threw the kitchen sink at Augsburg, who did everything they could to prevent the game from flowing. Jamie Gittens missed the best chance to equalise when his shot narrowly missed the target (80). Almugera Kabar became the third Dortmund player, after Evanilson and Markus Brzenska, to be sent off on his Bundesliga debut.
Biggest away win: On the Matchday 1 of the 2013/14 season, new signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang celebrated a dream debut in Black & Yellow. The Gabon international scored goals one, two and three for BVB in the 24th, 66th and 79th minutes. Robert Lewandowski put the icing on the cake with a penalty in the 86th minute to seal a 4-0 win in Augsburg.Compiled by Boris Rupert
