With Mykhailo Mudryk out suspended, Noni Madueke injured, Jadon Sancho out of form and Pedro Neto playing up front, young Tyrique George has never been so close to a first team start.
He’s come off the bench pretty regularly in recent weeks, and Enzo Maresca hinted that he could be starting the Conference League game next week against Copenhagen.
They discussed him on the Inside Chelsea show on TalkSport, and they agreed that the 19 year old is surely not far off a full Premier League debut.
“I don’t think he’s a million miles away from getting a start… in the Premier League,” Jason Cundy said.
“In those wide areas, if you think about our options, everyone saying how stacked we were – and we were – all of a sudden now you’re thinking, if Neto’s playing down the middle, that frees up another spot.
“Leicester at home, maybe that will be his chance,” Olivia Buzaglo pondered. We would love to see that – what better chance will he get than that?
Jason Cundy demonstrates Chelsea’s lack of depth out wide.
Of course the reason Neto is playing up front is because Christopher Nkunku has been used out wide. But despite him scoring a goal on Tuesday, he’s looking about as ineffective out there as he was leading the line.
His experience, pedigree and price tag are what’s keeping him in the team right now – if you went on form alone, George would be playing, there’s no doubting that. But we’ve seen countless times over the years at Chelsea that coaches love to stay conservative and pick older and more experienced players rather than giving youth a chance, no matter how convincing they look.
If we were a defender, we’d much rather be matched up with a disinterested Nkunku than a motivated and tricky George running at us.
