La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that AC Milan have received owner Gerry Cardinale’s green light to pursue Lazio centre-back Mario Gila.

The 25-year-old has one year left on his deal and there is no push for a renewal, so a summer sale is widely expected. Napoli, Juventus, Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid have all been linked in recent weeks.

Milan sporting director Igli Tare is keen on a reunion with the Barcelona-born defender he brought to Lazio in 2022, while head coach Massimiliano Allegri is also an admirer. Cardinale is said to be ready to back the coach with a high-level signing in every department.

There is strong competition for Gila, but the major obstacle is Lazio president Claudio Lotito, who is unwilling to accept a cut-price deal.

Despite the contract situation, Lotito is seeking €20-25 million. Real Madrid retain a 50% sell-on, so half of any fee would head to the Spanish club. If the valuation is not met, Gila could stay another year and leave for free in 2027.
