Manchester United Under-18s travelled to Stoke City on Saturday morning for league action. After successfully advancing past Peterborough United in the FA Youth Cup during the week, United coach Darren Fletcher turned his attention back to the league, where United continue to chase down Manchester City at the top of the table.
It was a dull start to the match, as neither side threatened the goals. Stoke almost took an early lead when Jayden Ogbebor nearly stole the ball from Fred Heath in the United goal, but the keeper recovered to prevent a catastrophe.
In the 23rd minute, Jay McEvoy had two efforts in quick succession; the first was blocked and the second was saved well by Lucas Knight. It was not until stoppage time that United took the lead through Rafe McCormack.
James Bailey’s free kick delivery found the head of Douka Nkoto, whose initial effort was saved, but McCormack was on hand to finish the rebound.
Stoke levelled the score early in the second half when Ogbebor broke free and chipped the ball over Fred Heath. United hit Stoke on the counter-attack, and JJ Gabriel was brought down in the box, but the referee waved away United’s protestations.
The home side almost stole a late winner when Josh McWilliams’ long-range effort looked destined for the top corner, but was tipped over by Heath. Ultimately, it was United who went to the other end and sealed the victory in stoppage time.
Yuel Helafu got to the byline and cut back into the area for Louie Bradbury to score from close range.
The win moves United into second place, four points behind Manchester City.
