Simon Adingra has been urged to channel his AFCON omission, and his response could begin back at the Amex. According to TheArgus.co.uk, the former Albion winger was left out of Ivory Coast’s squad for the tournament in Morocco.

He is expected to start for the first time since a 2-0 defeat at Manchester United on October four, when he was taken off after 37 minutes, as Sunderland visit on Saturday. He joined the Black Cats from the Seagulls in the summer. He played a major part in Ivory Coast’s success two years ago.

Head coach Regis Le Bris described Adingra as a very good, young player who will inevitably have ups and downs. With competition high for the national team and his recent limited minutes, he felt it was not a major surprise the winger stayed with Sunderland. He called the omission a shame but said the club will support him and that he is convinced Adingra can be a great player for them.

Le Bris added that Adingra needs backing and will get game time with fewer players available. He hopes the winger can force his way back into the national set-up for the World Cup.

Adingra made four Premier League starts in the first seven rounds, has come off the bench five times and has one goal. After a bright opening, he has tailed off and will look to reignite his season with Sunderland making a sensational start to the campaign.

Sunderland have six players at AFCON, and four of the XI who started the derby win over Newcastle have headed to the tournament. Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba is also away, while Yankuba Minteh remains available after Gambia failed to qualify.
