Manchester United were keen on signing Carlos Baleba from Brighton & Hove Albion, having held talks with both the club and the player over a summer move.
However, Brighton’s decision to keep Baleba at the Amex for at least one more season quickly put an end to United’s ambitious pursuit.
The Cameroon international was considered Ruben Amorim’s dream midfield option. After failing to secure his services, United are yet to identify their preferred alternative target.
Ahead of United’s Premier League opener, David Ornstein revealed that a number six is “on the agenda” at Old Trafford. However, Ornstein suggested deals for the likes of Morten Hjulmand and Adam Wharton are unlikely to come to fruition.
Now, United might be handed an opportunity to make a shrewd midfield addition.
Adrien Rabiot enjoyed a promising stint under Roberto De Zerbi in Ligue 1. However, Olympique de Marseille are now set to push the French midfielder out of the club after suspending him on disciplinary grounds.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Rabiot’s camp is looking for a new destination for the France international.
Romano further reveals that his representatives will offer him to various clubs, including United, as it is well known that the Red Devils are in the market for a new midfielder.
The Italian journalist adds that Marseille are willing to sell Rabiot for a fee between €15m-€20m.
United have been long-term admirers of the technically proficient Frenchman. The Mancunians tried to sign Rabiot in the summer of 2022 after accepting defeat in their chase of Frenkie de Jong.
United agreed a fee with Juventus for his services, but the move collapsed, as they could not reach an agreement over personal terms with his mother and agent, Veronique.
At present, the Premier League giants are not expected to re-ignite their interest, as the ex-PSG man doesn’t fit the profile that the club wants. Amorim wants to add athletic players to his ranks.
