Some matches have gone down in history for the sheer number of goals scored, earning their place in the annals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Nine goals! That’s the highest-scoring game ever in AFCON history. The record was set in 1963, in a clash between Egypt and Nigeria. The Pharaohs came out on top (6-3), leading (4-0) at halftime.
More recently, there have been two matches with 8 goals. First, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon defeated Zimbabwe (5-3), and then there was the thrilling 4-4 draw between Angola and Mali in 2010.
Here are the tournament’s most prolific matches:
8 Feb 1998: Côte d'Ivoire – Namibia (4-3)
16 Feb 1998: Côte d'Ivoire – Angola (5-2)
12 Nov 1965: Ghana – Congo-Léopoldville (5-2)
10 Feb 1970: Côte d'Ivoire – Ethiopia (6-1)
