In a match with multiple chances on both sides and led by an enormous Philipp Köhn, the Rouge et Blanc conceded in in added time and fell in this Trophée des Champions (1-0).
What a cruel finish! Led by a great Philipp Köhn in goal, the AS Monaco players held their own against the Parisians in this Trophée des Champions played in Doha but would fall in added time on a goal from Ousmane Dembélé. ✍️
After two weeks without a match following reaching the Round of 32 in the Coupe de France, AS Monaco were back to competition with the Trophée des Champions against PSG. It was a final with a chance for revenge for the Monégasques who were beaten by the Parisians in mid-December, and who were looking for a fifth title after 1961, 1985, 1997 and 2000.
This is a very important match for AS Monaco, which is being played against Paris Saint-Germain, to go for a title at the end. Three weeks ago, we already played against them and wanted to win, but we were not lucky. If we had been lucky, we could have snatched a draw or even won.
To make his revenge, Adi Hütter, who has just extended his contract, would have to do without the suspended Wilfried Singo and lined up in a 4-2-3-1. George Ilenikhena led the line, supported by Eliesse Ben Seghir, Takumi Minamino and Maghnes Akliouche. Denis Zakaria, back from injury, lined up alongisde Aleksandr Golovin.
The first minutes of this final were dominated by PSG and Philipp Köhn had to work early to deflect a shot from Désiré Doué onto his crossbar (9′). The Monaco goalkeeper, in great form, then proved decisive against Ousmane Dembélé twice (21′, 23rd’) and on an attempt by Vitinha (32′).
Following this situation, the Rouge et Blanc reacted and to threaten Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal. The latter was notably forced to make a diving save in front of Maghnes Akliouche’s superb right-footed strike (40′) and to stop Takumi Minamino’s shot (43′).
In the following minute, Philipp also made a sublime intervention by pushing away a shot from Kang-in-Lee with his fingertips (44′). The Korean would then miss the target (45+1′) for what was the last opportunity of this first half as the break arrived with the match goalless.
The Monaco players worked from the restart well but our number 11 lacked luck on two occasions (48′, 50′), before Eliesse Ben Seghir creates a big chance. On a ball deflected by Vanderson, the Moroccan midfielder stumbled against Donnarumma at the near post (53′). It was then the same for Doué in front of Köhn (54′). The game bceame crazy moments later, the Brazilian right back hits the post after a cross from Eliesse (55′).
Just before the last quarter of an hour, the Monegasque coach brought in new blood with the arrivals of Breel Embolo and Lamine Camara (72′). But it was Philipp Köhn who proved decisive again thanks to a firm to deny Achraf Hakimi (74′). The Rouge et Blanc responded through Taki’ who, from a tight angle, was denied by the Italian goalkeeper (79′).
It was then the turn of Soungoutou Magassa and Jordan Teze to come off the bench (86′). And the Dutchman was involved immediately but his shot lacked power (90′). The Rouge et Blanc goalkeeper was then once again decisive against Gonçalo Ramos (91′) but unfortunately could do nothing to stop Ousmane Dembélé, who was unmarked at the back post (92′).
It was a terrible finish… The players of the Principality club then put in their all in extra time to get back into the game. Unfortunately, their efforts were without success and they would lose by the smallest of margins in this Trophée des Champions against PSG (1-0). Now it’s time for the league with a trip to Nantes on Friday (7 p.m.), where they will have to get over this disappointment to get back to winning ways.. DAGHE MUNEGU!! 🇲🇨
