Jonathan David will become a free agent when his Lille contract expires next week but the demands of the player’s representatives are holding up the finalisation of a new club.

David is one of the most in-demand free agents on the market after deciding to leave Lille. The Canadian has scored 109 goals in 232 games for the French side and has breached 25+ goals in three consecutive campaigns.

Napoli led the initial running to sign the striker but have since cooled their interest. Juventus, meanwhile, have expressed interest in signing David but have reportedly baulked at the demands of his camp.

According to Gazzetta, David’s representatives are demanding €15m (£12.7m) in agent’s fees for the deal, a figure Juventus are unwilling to match. The Turin side will ‘close a deal’ if that figure is reduced significantly.

The stance could re-open the door for other clubs. West Ham are understood to have tabled a contract offer to David earlier in the transfer window, while Spurs, Newcastle United and Manchester United have all been linked. Turkish sides Galatasaray and Fenerbahce have also enquired.

David’s future is set to be decided once he returns from representing Canada at this summer’s Gold Cup. The 25-year-old netted in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over El Salvador as the Canadians booked a quarter-final against Guatemala. His goal was David’s 35th in 66 caps for Canada at senior level, a national record.
