Agustín Giay of Palmeiras has been called up by Argentina to replace the injured Montiel in the March international window.
The right-back was already in Argentina on club-approved leave and has been added to Lionel Scaloni’s squad. The federation announced the call-up in a post on Monday, and he will now join team-mate Flaco López in Buenos Aires. His selection adds to Palmeiras’ contingent for this window.
It is his first senior selection. In 2022, while with the under-20s, he took part in a training session with Lionel Messi and still highlights the photo on his profile.
Giay has been at Palmeiras since 2024, making 73 appearances, and recently started three consecutive matches, victories over Mirassol, Botafogo and São Paulo, where he performed well.
Argentina are scheduled to play two friendlies in this window, against Mauritania on 27 March and Zambia on 31 March, both in Buenos Aires.
A meeting with Guatemala had initially been planned, but AFA changed the opponent to Zambia due to logistics. FIFA does not allow a national team to play on two continents in the same window, and Guatemala face Algeria in Italy.
Before this plan was set, Argentina were to meet Spain in the Finalissima in Qatar as the Copa América and Euro champions. The match was postponed amid developments in the war, then dates could not be agreed, so AFA arranged the Mauritania and Zambia friendlies.
