England sealed a dramatic 2–1 extra-time victory over Italy to reach the final of the Women’s European Championship for the second consecutive time, thanks to late heroics from substitute Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. Chelsea star Lauren James registered the game’s first shot on target, drilling her effort straight at goalkeeper Laura Giuliani on 10 minutes.Italy scored from their first attempt of the game in the 33rd minute when Barbara Bonansea took advantage of England’s poor defending to smash the ball into the roof of the net from close range.England responded positively to the setback with Giuliani denying James from scoring before Keira Walsh bent her effort from the edge of the box wide. After the break, James came off and was replaced by Arsenal forward Beth Mead. The Lionesses started the second half on the front foot, and Lauren Hemp should have restored parity for them with consecutive chances, but she could not convert on both occasions. The Italians then forced goalkeeper Hannah Hampton to make a save from a counterattack.Deep into stoppage time, Agyemang grabbed the equaliser for England, clinically putting the ball into the net after Giuliani’s poor handling of a cross to take the game into extra time.Giuliani almost gifted England the winning goal early in the first extra time when she struggled to deal with Ella Toone’s cross. The Lionesses grabbed the winning goal in the second half of extra time after a penalty was awarded for a foul on Mead which Kelly stepped up to convert. The Arsenal forward’s penalty was saved but she was able to convert from the rebound to hand a dramatic win to the defending champions. England will now play the winner between Spain and Germany in the final on Sunday.
