Former Hoops winger Aiden McGeady has thrown his support behind Robbie Keane as the leading option to take charge at Celtic, suggesting the Irishman would be an ideal appointment if paired with Martin O’Neill in a supporting capacity…

With speculation continuing over the managerial position, Keane has emerged as a prominent contender after impressing during his time with Ferencvaros, where he secured the league title last season and guided the club to the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Despite holding a 2-0 lead over Braga in the last 16 of the Europa League, they were comfortably beaten 4-0 in Portugal and exited the competition.

McGeady has pointed to Keane’s consistent success, insisting that he has claimed trophies in each of his managerial spells to date, including stints in Hungary and with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Speaking via Go Radio Football Show, McGeady said: “He’s been the name that’s been the strongest and the loudest. If it’s going to be Martin O’Neill or that kind of advisor or someone to help. I think that’s quite important, especially the way that Celtic have been this season. I think there’s obviously been a big disconnect between the fans, and the board and the club.”

“Robbie Keane seems to be the loudest bit. Regardless of the Irish connection, if you actually look at his record, he’s won a trophy every season he’s been a manager. He’s managed in two different countries.”

“I think Ferencvaros got to the last 16 of the Europa League as well. He’s been very, very successful in a short space of time. If you’re looking at candidates based on what they’ve done so far in their CV, I think he is an outstanding candidate. He always dreamed of playing for Celtic. He said that about 20 years ago.”
