Marc-Andre ter Stegen is close to completing his loan move from FC Barcelona to Ajax, but the deal has not been welcomed by everyone in the Netherlands.
The German goalkeeper is expected to travel to Amsterdam in the coming days for his medical before joining the Dutch club as their new first-choice goalkeeper.
According to SPORT, the loan agreement is already in place, although the final step depends on Ter Stegen passing his medical tests.
Ajax see the 34-year-old as a major reinforcement, especially with Jordi Cruyff and Michel both backing the move. But some Dutch voices are far less convinced.
Journalist Valentijn Driessen was especially direct, saying:
“Now they are bringing in a goalkeeper who used to be good in the past, but they are not going to get anything out of this.”
Johan Derksen was also critical, pointing to Ter Stegen’s recent injury record.
He said:
“He has defended a goal three times in 22 months and is always injured. At Ajax they are acting as if they had won the lottery and with that background I would have serious doubts.”
From a Barcelona perspective, this criticism does not change the logic of the operation. Ter Stegen has lost prominence under Hansi Flick, and Barca need to reduce the wage bill.
A loan to Ajax gives the club financial breathing room while allowing a long-serving captain to play regularly again.
There is a clear risk for Ajax. Ter Stegen must prove his fitness after a difficult physical period. However, if he stays healthy, his experience, leadership, and quality with the ball could still be valuable.
For Barca, the important thing is that the deal moves forward. Sentiment matters, but squad planning matters too.
Ter Stegen gave Barcelona many years of service. Now, if the medical goes well, Ajax may offer him the fresh start he needs while helping Barca close an important exit.
