Ajax are nearing the appointment of a new head coach following Francesco Farioli’s dramatic departure. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Amsterdam club are in advanced talks to re-appoint John Heitinga. The former Ajax player and manager is currently Arne Slot’s assistant with Premier League champions Liverpool. The club have given Heitinga permission to discuss the vacant role.
Liverpool are said to already be looking for replacements with John Heitinga’s return to Ajax progressing quickly. Romano reports that it ‘looks likely’ he’ll become the new head coach of Ajax. The news comes just over a week after their final-day disaster, when the Eredivisie title slipped right out of Ajax’s hands, and they were forced to settle for a second-place finish.
Initially, Ajax relied on the return of Erik ten Hag. He was also approached, but chose Bayer Leverkusen. Michael Reiziger was reportedly also in the picture, but he extended his contract with the KNVB on Monday, as national coach of Jong Oranje.
