Al-Sadd have relaunched discussions with Lazio over Alessio Romagnoli and are seeking a route to revive the stalled deal, according to Il Corriere dello Sport.

The seven-month pursuit had reached an understanding at €three million for the defender, who was ready to sign a three-year contract with a €six million salary, before the move was reported to have collapsed amid the situation in the Middle East.

With Qatar imposing restrictions on monetary transactions, Al-Sadd asked to delay payment until January. Cash-strapped Lazio refused, then restored the centre-back to Gennaro Gattuso’s squad.

This week brought a renewed exchange, with Al-Sadd submitting a fresh payment proposal on Tuesday and Lazio responding with a counter on Wednesday. Whether a compromise can be found remains unclear.

Romagnoli continues to train at Formello with his team-mates, while closing the door to other proposals. If Al-Sadd fall short, the 32-year-old will have to weigh alternatives. Atalanta have offered a reunion with Maurizio Sarri, though he reportedly prefers a foreign experience.
