Dominic Calvert-Lewin appears to have missed his England World Cup chance after spurning a glaring header against Uruguay. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Alan Shearer delivered a blunt assessment of the Leeds United striker’s miss.
Back in the national squad for the first time in five years this month, Calvert-Lewin stayed on the bench on Friday before replacing Dominic Solanke on 56 minutes. He immediately headed wide from close range.
Ben White scored in a 1-1 draw with Marcelo Bielsa’s side, but post-match debate centred on Thomas Tuchel’s lack of a clear understudy for the rested Harry Kane.
Shearer highlighted the shortage of top centre-forwards at England’s disposal and felt it was probably a night suited to Ollie Watkins. He said Solanke did fine while Calvert-Lewin missed a sitter, adding that Watkins would have been watching and thinking he needs to be in the squad. Gary Lineker agreed that strikers must take their chances.
Tuchel praised Solanke’s pressing and workrate, and said Calvert-Lewin initially needed time to adjust to the press before passing up a big headed chance from around six metres. He noted the Leeds forward linked play well through the middle. Calvert-Lewin was then sent back to West Yorkshire as Tuchel trimmed the group, with Solanke retained and Kane returning to face Japan this week.
