Alarm for Athletic Club and Spain as Nico Williams left the La Liga match against Valencia at San Mamés after feeling discomfort, roughly a month before the World Cup.

The Athletic No 10 made way for his brother Iñaki and walked off visibly dejected. He was heard repeating that it could not be happening. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, his chief concern is the World Cup this summer.

Ernesto Valverde had encouraged him to halt physical activity in mid February as pubalgia continued to trouble him. After treatment, his return had appeared straightforward.

The left winger did not play again until five April against Getafe. He had featured in five matches since then, six counting Valencia, and came into this one after two goals and an assist against Alavés. Athletic are pushing for a European place next season.

Luis de la Fuente has repeatedly said Williams is very important and, if fit, is a regular pick for Spain. Decisions now depend on medical tests. With little time to recover, his place is uncertain and a serious injury would rule him out.
