Alejandro Domínguez says 2030 World Cup will feature 64 teams | OneFootball

Alejandro Domínguez, the Conmebol president and a Fifa vice-president, said in a post on X that the 2030 World Cup will feature 64 teams.

His message arrives after the 2026 tournament concluded with Spain beating Argentina. The 2030 event is scheduled to be staged in Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

He presented it as a home World Cup for Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, and as a chance to mark the competition’s centenary with a larger field.

Fifa has not formalised any change and has not commented on Domínguez’s remarks. The previous expansion from 32 to 48 teams drew heavy criticism.

In November 2025 he had already set out the same ambition, portraying the format as a way to unite the world, introduce football to more people and create a different kind of celebration.

To commemorate the tournament’s 100th anniversary, the three opening matches in 2030 are due to be played in Asunción, Buenos Aires and Montevideo.
