Alex McCarthy has signed for Leicester City on a free after his Southampton contract expired.

According to Sainstmarching.com, Chelsea explored a move for the 36-year-old free agent but he rejected it, prioritising regular first-team football with Leicester.

McCarthy has not been Southampton’s first-choice for some time, featuring only seven times in the Championship last season. A switch to the King Power offers a clearer path to minutes under Russell Martin, who previously managed him at St Mary’s.

Under Martin’s guidance last season, McCarthy kept two clean sheets in three play-off matches as Southampton won promotion back to the Premier League.

With extensive top-flight experience behind him, he will aim to shed any rust and compete to be Leicester’s number one, and he will hope to be part of another promotion push.
