Alexander Isak has spoken publicly for the first time since completing his £125 million transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle United. The striker, who became the most expensive signing in British football history on deadline day, discussed his move after Sweden’s 2-0 defeat to Kosovo in their World Cup qualifier.
“It’s great that everything was settled before the camp and that I could focus on playing football again,” he told Swedish media. “It’s been a fairly new situation for me, but you always learn and develop mentally off the pitch as well.”
The 25-year-old returned to competitive action for the first time since May, coming off the bench in the 72nd minute in Pristina. His absence over the summer had been the subject of intense speculation, with Isak refusing to take part in Newcastle’s pre-season and missing the opening three Premier League fixtures while pushing for his move to Liverpool.
Not everyone was convinced by the way he left St James’ Park, but Isak believes the story is more complex. “Not everyone has the full picture, but that’s something for another day,” he said. “I can’t control everything that’s said or written. But I’m happy that I became a Liverpool player.”
Sweden’s defeat to Kosovo compounded what should have been a moment of personal relief for Isak. The loss was Kosovo’s first-ever victory over Sweden and leaves his country’s qualification hopes in jeopardy. They now sit third in Group B with just one point from two matches, behind leaders Switzerland and second-placed Kosovo.

For Liverpool, the focus will now be on integrating Isak into Arne Slot’s system. His return to match fitness will be closely monitored, with supporters eager to see how quickly their new No.9 can adapt at Anfield. The size of the transfer fee brings expectation, but his comments suggest a player ready to embrace the challenge of leading Liverpool’s line.
