Alexander Isak (26) could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected broken leg during Liverpool’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Tottenham.

The striker gave Liverpool the lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but was injured in the same move when he was caught late by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven. Isak immediately signalled for treatment and was unable to continue, leaving the pitch with the help of Liverpool’s medical staff.

Liverpool are awaiting scan results to confirm the extent of the damage, with fears the Sweden international has suffered a serious lower-leg injury, according to reports from Sky Sports. Head coach Arne Slot said after the match that the club would need to wait for further tests before knowing more.

It’s difficult to know exactly what he has,” Slot said. “It’s never a nice thing when there is a collision like that after a goal. Hopefully he’s fine, but we have to wait and see.”

The injury is the latest setback in a difficult first season at Anfield for Isak, who joined from Newcastle for a club-record £125m in the summer. A groin injury sidelined him for five matches earlier in the campaign, contributing to a return of three goals in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Any extended absence would leave Liverpool short of attacking options. Mohamed Salah is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations, while Cody Gakpo is not expected back until the new year.

Hugo Ekitike and Federico Chiesa are now Slot’s remaining senior forwards, with Ekitike in good form ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.
