Franco-Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane, son of the legendary Zinedine Zidane, has officially switched his sporting nationality to join the Algerian national team. This decision immediately sparked a wave of mixed reactions. Some see it as an opportunistic move, driven by the desire to play at AFCON 2025 and the 2026 World Cup, rather than a choice from the heart.

Daniel Riolo speaks out

In response to the criticism, Daniel Riolo wanted to offer a different perspective. The RMC Sport commentator stated that he "completely understands" the goalkeeper's decision. In his view, in modern football, "it's an opportunity for him, and it's happening more and more." Riolo points out the debate should not focus on his father's career: "Just because his father was a French legend, does that mean he can't play for another country?" For the journalist, the main point is elsewhere: if Luca Zidane "gives 100% to defend his country's values, there's absolutely no issue."

He also reminds us that the Granada keeper grew up close to his Algerian grandparents and that his roots are genuine, even if his culture is largely Spanish. Finally, Riolo highlights the sporting context: Algeria is sorely lacking top-level goalkeepers, and bringing in Zidane could be a "win-win" scenario.

As Algeria prepares for two crucial matches in October to secure their ticket to the 2026 World Cup, a first call-up for Luca Zidane by Vladimir Petkovic cannot be ruled out. With the goalkeeper position currently one of the team's weaknesses, his arrival could be a major boost. Nothing is official yet, but the likelihood is growing as the international calendar draws closer.
