It now seems with each passing day that an update on the situation surrounding Ederson emerges. It does appear that the Brazilian international will leave Manchester City at the end of this season. Now a new report from Fabrizio Romano indicates that Ederson has a concrete chance of leaving City this summer. The counter to that is a new report from Sacha Tavolieri indicating that City are closing in on a deal to sign Diogo Costa this summer. So it does seem that City may have a new number-one keeper coming in as a club stalwart looks set to depart.

First of all, Fabrizio Romano has reported via X that Ederson has attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League once again. Furthermore, Romano reports Ederson had offers from Saudi Pro League clubs last summer. Lastly, Romano adds that the chances have increased that Ederson will leave Manchester City this summer. Romano’s report can be seen below.

Diogo Costa looms as Ederson’s replacement based on a new report.

Sacha Tavolieri of SkySports has reported that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City’s goalkeeping coach Xabier Mancisidor, have held talks with FC Porto keeper Diogo Costa. Furthermore, Tavolieri reports that Costa has been reassured that he will City’s number-one keeper if he does sign for the club. Tavolieri further reports that Costa has given the ‘green light’ to a potential move to the Etihad. Sacha Tavolieri adds that FC Porto is likely to demand €75 million to part ways with the Portuguese international. They deem Diogo Costa to be irreplaceable and Costa does have a €75 million release clause in his current contract. But Tavolieri adds that Hugo Viana is in ‘constant contact’ with Diogo Costa’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to try and facilitate a move for under €60 million. That is what Manchester City hope to pay for Portugal’s number-one keeper.

My thoughts.

If Ederson does leave Manchester City this summer, they’ll need a replacement. That’s obvious. While there is an argument to be made that signing a young keeper could be beneficial, signing an established goalkeeper is a wise move from City. Diogo Costa is that and he is only 25 years of age. Costa is a proven performer for both club and country. He does have the required pedigree and talent to become Manchester City’s next number-one keeper.

But what Diogo Costa isn’t is a like-for-like replacement for Ederson. There isn’t that type of keeper in the game. Ederson is a one of a kind keeper with his ability on the ball. So if you’re expecting a like-for-like replacement for the Brazilian international you’ll likely be disappointed. But as an option to come in and be Manchester City’s next number-one keeper Diogo Costa is a fine choice. It now appears that City have settled on that move as Ederson appears set to leave the club at the end of the season. If that’s how it plays out Manchester City will have a quality keeper coming in to replace a player who could go down as the club’s greatest ever goalkeeper.
