Xabi Alonso appeared in front of the media earlier today for his pre-match press conference before Real Madrid face Deportivo Alaves on Sunday.

The match could be the last straw for the 44-year-old Basque tactician, whose job is hanging by a thread after a run of only two wins in the last eight matches in all competitions.

Given the situation, there has been plenty of noise surrounding his future and possible replacements, with Castilla head coach Alvaro Arbeloa being seen as one of the candidates to take over.

Alonso annoyed over future, Arbeloa questions

Naturally, it was a major talking point during his press conference as Alonso was bombarded with questions about his future at Real Madrid.

Towards the end, one of the journalists present even asked if he had spoken with Arbeloa about the situation and the rumours of the latter being seen as an option for the first-team position.

And, according to Carrusel Deportivo, Alonso was left very ‘annoyed’ and ‘nervous’ today after the press conference, especially with the line of questioning over his future and Arbeloa’s candidacy as his replacement.

“I think Arbeloa could be the coach of Madrid, he’s doing things well, but we haven’t talked about it,” Alonso said, when asked about Arbeloa.

Nonetheless, as per the report, Alonso was annoyed by the question, while he was also said to be nervous, as his future hangs in the balance.

Arbeloa, meanwhile, has done a solid job at the club, first with the Juvenil A setup and now with Castilla. The former defender has been key to the development of some of the young talents coming through the ranks.

So, he could become a serious candidate in case Real Madrid do decide to part ways with Alonso.
