Manchester United had to be content with only a point after playing out an eight-goal thriller against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Monday.
The home side started in rampant fashion and deservedly took an early lead through Amad. But they let the visitors back into the contest against the run of play through Antoine Semenyo.
Casemiro ensured the Red Devils went into the break with a one-goal advantage, but the second half started disastrously.
The visitors scored twice within the first seven minutes, and Ruben Amorim’s tactical tweak meant most of the backline seemed confused.
However, the switch to a back-four did help unleash the team’s attacking potential, as Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha scored to once again hand the lead to the 20-time English league champions.
However, they failed to hold on in the end, and conceded a late equaliser. After the game, Amad was asked about the change in system, to which he told MUTV, “I think it depends on the opponent.
“We work depending on the opponent, when sometimes we play as a 4-4-2, sometimes we play as a 3-4-3, sometimes also we play 4-3-3, maybe people outside don’t see. As a team, we can change.
“But the system doesn’t matter for us. Today, [the focus] was to win this game, so we are really disappointed, but at the same time we take one point and then we’re going to prepare the next game.”
Despite the entertainment, throwing away the lead three times in one game deserves criticism and the Ivorian revealed his teammates were disappointed with the outcome.
“You can see straight away in the dressing room, everyone was very disappointed because we know as a team, we can do much better.
“We knew we can win this game today, but [it’s] a big disappointment that we take one point and [we’re] thinking about the next game.
“I think when we conceded the goal, the two goals straight away in the second half, we had that pressure to come [back] into the game.
“We did the 4-3, but it’s a big disappointment we didn’t win this game because if we win this game, we are better in the league [table “” not found /] . But it’s not bad also to draw. The worst one was to lose this game. So, we’re going to take one point and prepare the next game.”
The 23-year-old will not be available for the game against Aston Villa as he, along with Bryan Mbeumo will be leaving for AFCON after Monday night’s game.
Amorim has an uphill task against an in-form side. It will be interesting to see how he goes about things in the absence of his two key creative outlets.
