The legendary former Dutch footballer, Marco van Basten, has sparked fierce controversy with scathing criticism of Liverpool winger and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah. His comments come in the wake of the player's own controversial statements, which hinted at a tense relationship with his coach Arne Slot.
Van Basten, now 61, did not mince his words, branding Salah's behavior towards his coach as "wrong" and even claiming that the Egyptian "has the brain of a beetle."
Speaking on Ziggo Sport, he stated: "I say he has a beetle's brain. If that's his reaction... He had an outstanding season last year, but this year, he hasn't been up to par. He's been poor in recent months."
He went on: "I see Slot as someone who is straightforward and honest, who doesn't shy away from confrontation and never speaks lightly. Salah, on the other hand, started to attack the man and behave inappropriately."
Meanwhile, former French-Algerian international Samir Nasri sought to put the criticism of Salah into perspective: "Salah is not responsible for Liverpool's current form. Yes, his level has dropped, but Slot shouldn't forget everything he contributed last season. The main issue is the change in system."
Nasri added: "I would have preferred Salah to speak up earlier about the team's difficulties and to take on a leadership role, rather than focus on his own situation. He should have had a one-on-one conversation with Slot about it."
