According to LaNumer12.com.ar, Ander Herrera is weighing up retiring if he does not remain at Boca, despite being under contract until December 2026.

He has travelled to Spain to spend the holidays with his family, and will use the break to decide whether to continue in football or step aside.

Riquelme is monitoring the situation, while the player stays in regular contact with the board and coaching staff.

His chief motivation to carry on is the Copa Libertadores. He dreams of playing the top continental competition with Boca, which could see him extend his career by at least one more year.

It is set that at the start of 2026, specifically Friday 2 January, he will report back to the Ezeiza training complex. He will either begin pre-season with the group or collect his belongings, which he has yet to pick up, and say his goodbyes. The final decision rests with him.

Since joining, the Basque midfielder has played 17 matches. Muscular injuries have sidelined him at times, though lately he was earning minutes off the bench and impressing. He has even worn the captain’s armband in one game.

He did not feature in the team’s final match of the year, a surprise given Claudio Úbeda had been using him late on. That was a blow for the 36-year-old, who might channel it as motivation to return and fight for the club’s biggest title.
