André Villas-Boas has taken fresh aim at Benfica, using Porto’s Dragões magazine to criticise the Lisbon club over its complaint to the FPF’s Disciplinary Council. According to Glorioso 1904, the body has opened proceedings against Porto after Benfica’s submission.
In his column, the Porto president alleged the rival were known for hiring priests to conduct masses at sporting events, and said they had asked the council to punish Porto for exposing such practices. He added that Porto wished the justice system luck in proving the facts, claiming there was a strong chance someone named Gonçalves would be used as a scapegoat.
He argued these realities, and an inability to manage Portuguese football, undermine the credibility of institutions. He also mocked nostalgia for Porto’s ball boys and the Dragão dressing-room décor, suggesting such distractions had helped to cover other practices.
The disciplinary angle follows Benfica’s complaint to the FPF’s Disciplinary Council against Porto and Francisco J. Marques, the club’s former executive, after the disclosure of emails.
In February 2025, the Supreme Court upheld a Court of Appeal ruling ordering Porto to compensate Benfica for the improper airing of emails belonging to the Lisbon club during a broadcast on the northern side’s channel.
