Andreas Pereira scuffed the penalty spot moments before Memphis Depay slipped and struck wide during the first half of Corinthians v Palmeiras at Neo Química Arena on Sunday in the Campeonato Paulista.
At 33 minutes, referee Raphael Claus awarded a penalty after Carlos Miguel rushed out to punch a corner and caught Gustavo Henrique on the head inside the area.
As reported by Globo.com, while players argued with and pressured the referee during a VAR check, the Palmeiras midfielder used his boots to rough up the turf around the mark, with television images capturing the act.
Neither Claus nor any other player appeared to notice.
When Memphis stepped up, he lost his footing at the same area and sent the kick wide, spurning Corinthians' chance to lead before the break.
The derby was part of the seventh round of the Paulistão.
