Former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou was on punditry duties for the FA Cup clash between Man City and Southampton. The Australian manager was joined by his former goalkeeper at Celtic and City legend, Joe Hart for the match up at Wembley.

It wasn’t all a Celtic love-in as iconic Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard joined the team to discuss Pep’s impressive City.

The meet-up between Ange and Gerrard invokes memories of Ange’s incredible first season at Paradise after stepping in after the COVID season. Despite being in Glasgow at the same time, the pair never faced off against each other, as Gerrard was sidelined with COVID for the opening Glasgow Derby game of the 2021/22 season.

Months later, in November 2021, Gerrard absconded from Ibrox and headed to Aston Villa, where he failed to make an impact. The timing of his departure was interesting as it looked like Celtic were gearing up under Ange.

The season is memorable for Celtic fans given the high octane play and incredible atmosphere under the lights in February 2022 when Celtic beat Rangers 3-0 to re-establish their stranglehold on Scottish football.

In over three seasons at Ibrox, Gerrard won just one trophy – the Premiership title during COVID. It has been levelled at Gerrard that he underachieved given the expense poured into his playing squad, as well as the free run that they had in 2020/21 for a Treble, only for St Johnstone to enjoy a more successful season. Despite winning both the League Cup and Scottish Cup, Saints boss Callum Davidson was overlooked for manager of the season with Gerrard awarded the accolade.

It would be interesting to hear the views of both men on that season, given that it was a sliding doors moment.
