Ángel Sánchez, 49, a former UD Las Palmas and Universidad CF player, is in a critical condition and receiving palliative care after an illness worsened over the past year. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the Gran Canaria football community is in distress.

José Ojeda, captain and emblem of Universidad CF, said the group were devastated. The Universidad side reached the second tier and shone in Segunda B under Tino Luis Cabrera.

Sánchez wore the yellow shirt from 2002 to 2004, making 34 appearances. He debuted under Paco Castellano and settled in the first team in 03-04 with Juan Manuel Rodríguez, a season that ended in relegation to Segunda B after stints under David Vidal and the late Stambouli.

He had loan spells at Vecindario and UD Lanzarote. He later turned out for Universidad CF, L'Hospitalet and Eivissa-Ibiza, spending six seasons across two spells with Universidad as an attacking midfielder and interior.

Sánchez later coached UD Vecindario, Villa de Santa Brígida, Estrella, Mensajero, San Antonio and Las Palmas C. He retired at San Antonio, then took charge of the capital club before moving into dugouts around the archipelago.

The news arrives just days after the death of Scifo, who played for Las Palmas Atlético and came close to a first-team debut.
