Germany goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger has accepted blame for their exit from Euro 2025, after Aitana Bonmati sent Spain through to a final against England.
Spain beat Germany 1-0 in extra-time to reach the Women’s Euro 2025 final, which will take place this Sunday.
The game was just seven minutes away from penalties when the ball was played to Aitana Bonmati who took a shot from an acute angle.
Ann-Katrin Berger left a big gap at her near post, and the ball crashed into the back of the net, ending Germany’s hopes of reaching the Women’s Euro 2025 final.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper appeared to be attempting to organising her centre-backs for a potential cross and was caught out by Bonmati.
Bonmati said after the game that analysts ahead of the game discovered that Berger sometimes left her near post ’empty’.
It was a cruel moment for Berger who had made some brilliant saves to help Germany get this far in the tournament.
Ann-Katrin Berger said she had no excuse after leaving a gap at her near post to allow Aitana Bonmati to score and send Germany crashing out of Euro 2025.
Speaking to ARD, she said: “I take the blame. I had to cover the near post.
“That’s why I’m all the more disappointed in myself, because no matter how many saves I make, that one should have been mine. I feel incredibly sorry for the team.
“The girls played a great game. The disappointment is huge. We gave everything until the very last second.
“It all came down to one instance in which we weren’t switched on. That makes it all the more bitter.”
German teammate Janina Minge though refused to blame the goalkeeper.
She said: “Everyone knows that Ann has kept us in the tournament so many times.
“It’s extremely bitter that a ball like that went in, but five balls that Ann saved brilliantly could have gone in before that. Ann is definitely not to blame.”
Spain’s matchwinner Aitana Bonmati was in a hospital bed just before Women’s Euro 2025 got underway.
She almost missed the tournament after suffering from viral meningitis. However, she was discharged in time to join up with her Spain teammates in Switzerland.
The Ballon d’Or Femenina winner has started the last three games after coming off the bench in Spain’s opening two group matches.
Her big moment though came in the semi-final as she scored to send her country through to the final.
After the game she said: “We, the analysts and the goalkeeping coach, had studied it. We concluded that sometimes the near post was empty.
“It was a pass into the net. I didn’t hesitate for a second.”
She added: “‘I’m proud because we deserve it. We had a tremendous championship. ‘It was the first time that we have beaten Germany, and on top of that, we reached the final. We work for this every day.”
It will be England vs Spain in the final of Women’s Euro 2025 on Sunday, July 27th, in Basel.
The two sides went into the tournament as the standout favourites, after previously facing off in the 2023 World Cup final.
Spain got the win that day, and according to the UK’s top betting sites, they are expected to do the same on Sunday.
Montse Tome’s side are 1/3 favourites to win the tournament, while the Lionesses are at odds of 2/1.
