Real Sociedad B under Jon Ansotegi are punching above their years, sitting 16th on 31 points after 26 games, three clear of danger, and trending towards bettering the club’s last stint at this level.

AS notes that the youngsters have stood up in imposing arenas. They beat Málaga 2-1 at Anoeta, drew 0-0 with Las Palmas, won at Valladolid and dismantled Deportivo 3-0 at Riazor.

In 2021-22 under Xabi Alonso they ended on 40 points from 42 rounds, with 10 wins, 10 draws and 22 defeats. With 16 matches left, Ansotegi’s group have 31 points from eight wins, seven draws and 11 losses, plus a tighter 34-36 goal balance versus 43-61. They sit nine points and two wins shy of matching that season’s totals, with 48 still on offer.

Gorka Carrera leads the line with 11 goals. Kita, the sole summer addition, has impressed and is being monitored by first-team coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. Job Ochieng has debuted for the seniors, with minutes for Dani Díaz and call-ups for Ibai Aguirre and Astiazaran.

Absences have forced dips into the third team, with Ayo, Calderón and Aguirre stepping up smoothly. Long-term injuries to Olasagasti and Orobengoa, pencilled in as starting striker, and an early setback for Lebarbier, have complicated selection.

Zubieta’s ethos prioritises development ahead of weekend results, a stance echoed by academy coach Borja Viguera and by Ansotegi, who stresses confidence and growth in Liga Hypermotion. Even so, they are rarely blown away, with only Granada 5-2, Ceuta 1-3 and Leganés 2-0 prevailing by such margins.
