Newcastle United host Everton at St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, looking to return to winning ways and reignite their European ambitions.
The Magpies ran riot in the reverse fixture at Hill Dickinson Stadium in November, claiming a thumping 4-1 victory over the Toffees.
That was their first away win of the season, and they’ll be keen to replicate that performance and result on home turf.
The Magpies will enter this fixture brimming with confidence after winning four of their last five games across all competitions (L1).
While they’ve failed to replicate that form in the Premier League, losing four of their last five league games (W1), Everton’s visit offers them an ideal platform to spark a resurgence.
Newcastle have lost just one of their last five meetings with Everton at St. James’ Park.
Ominously, that defeat came in their most recent clash in Tyneside, ending the Magpies’ four-match unbeaten streak against the Toffees at home (W3, D1).
However, after scoring 15 goals in their last five games (averaging three goals per match), Newcastle will fancy their chances of returning to winning ways at Everton’s expense.
After a riotous 6-1 victory over Qarabag FK in their Champions League play-off first leg, Howe decided to name a second-string line-up for the dead-rubber on home turf.
That means the English manager is ready to unleash the big guns against Everton and could make up to six changes for the must-win home clash.
Nick Pope should reclaim his place in goal, while Malick Thiaw and Lewis Hall also return to the XI to partner Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier in defence.
Howe’s experiment with Nick Woltemade in midfield has left many stunned.
He has visibly struggled in his new role, particularly out of possession, and should make way for Joe Willock to partner Sandro Tonali and Joelinton.
Meanwhile, Anthony Gordon will likely return to the XI as a centre-forward once again after overtaking Alan Shearer to become Newcastle’s all-time top goalscorer in the Champions League.
The history-maker, who is reportedly drawing interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, will likely be flanked by Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga up front.
