Anthony Gordon came off in the 41st minute as Newcastle United claimed a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao at St James’ Park last night.
The Newcastle ace has bagged three goals in the Champions League despite firing blanks domestically, and was hoping to add to his tally.
However, he pulled up with an injury and manager Eddie Howe confirmed he will need to be assessed.
Howe said (via The Northern Echo): “I’ve not spoken to him, and I haven’t really had a full rundown from the medical team.
“It seems like a recurrence of his hip injury that has been plaguing him in recent weeks. We’ll assess that and see what damage is there.”
Howe recently revealed that Gordon had been suffering from a slight hip injury during the loss to West Ham United.
That affected him again on Tyneside as he left the pitch holding that part of his body.
Gordon’s latest injury setback means he will likely be unavailable for the upcoming England games later this month, although it could allow him to rest and recover.
He was not the only Newcastle player who suffered an injury setback.
William Osula has been nursing an ankle injury, and despite being named on the bench for the clash against Bilbao, the Geordies announced that he wouldn’t participate.
“We’ve been in discussions with him at length about his ankle in the last few days as to whether he’s fit enough to perform to the level we need and he’s comfortable with,” Howe added.
“After a discussion, we felt it was better to withdraw him and get his ankle 100 percent right.”
Despite the setbacks, there was some good news for Newcastle as Bruno Guimaraes managed to shake off a knock and play.
Defender Lewis Hall also made a cameo appearance after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
