Anthony Gordon to Liverpool green light: Newcastle have already lined up their replacement | OneFootball

It’s no secret that a pathway is opening up for Liverpool to sign Anthony Gordon.

With Newcastle once again in financial dire straits there is a need for the Geordies to cash in on top talents this summer.

Gordon - who came close to joining the Reds back in 2024 - has been suggested as a potential departure. And if the 25-year-old is listed for sale - with £100m being quoted as a price tag - expect Richard Hughes to be right there for his signature.

The England international was not only raised in the Liverpool system until the age of around 11 but it’s believed his head was turned when his hometown club came calling.

Gordon is most comfortably on the left wing - where Arne Slot could certainly fit him in - but can also be pressed into service at right wing and centre-forward.

The latter position is now of increased importance given Hugo Ekitike’s injury - which could sideline him for the foreseeable future.

Gordon could provide the exact kind of polyvalent threat that Liverpool need during Ekitike’s absence - and also cover the loss of Mohamed Salah.

Newcastle prepare for life without Gordon

There is good reason to believe that Newcastle are gearing up for a sale meanwhile with Sports Boom claiming that a replacement for Gordon has already been sourced.

The 20-year-old Porto forward William Gomes has impressed recruiters from around the Premier League as well as across Europe during this breakout 2025/26 season.

Acquired from Sao Paulo back in 2025 Gomes has been in electric form for the Portuguese champions-elect - leading to speculation that he will be on the move this summer.

The report claims Newcastle have made the first move for Gomes - with Porto prepared to listen to offers around the £52m to 62m mark.

Although the left-footer has got a release clause in his contract the Portuguese giants may well do business below its value.

“The €80 million release clause in the player’s contract, which runs until 2029, is the biggest trump card strengthening Porto’s hand,” the report reads.

“The club president and the transfer committee have decided not to even bring any offer below the €60-70 million mark to the negotiation table.

“One of the most loudly discussed claims in the transfer corridors is that Newcastle United has pulled the trigger for Gomes. Newcastle scouts have been following the player since his São Paulo days and recently took their places in the stands during Porto’s European matches. “

Set as Plan B against a potential departure of Anthony Gordon, Newcastle is expected to knock on the door with an offer of approximately £43.5 million (€50 million). On the other hand, Arsenal and Chelsea are also closely monitoring the player’s situation.”
