Leeds United midfielder Anton Stach finally reached Julian Nagelsmann after a string of missed calls to learn of his Germany recall, sparking celebrations at home.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, it is his first involvement in four years and the 27-year-old dead-ball specialist has been selected for friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana in the upcoming window. Nagelsmann had recently noted Stach was performing well but was not exceptional in the air or a top ball-winner, leaving his inclusion uncertain, yet Premier League form has won respect, or at least intrigue.
Stach said he spotted a German number, called back with no answer, then answered on loudspeaker when it rang again. Nagelsmann introduced himself and Stach’s immediate response was “what?!”, as his wife and a friend screamed on hearing the name.
He marked the moment quietly, dropping his friend at Leeds station before eating shawarma in the city centre and enjoying the sunshine.
Team-mates at Thorp Arch congratulated him on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Brentford. Daniel Farke said the call-up was well deserved, praising Stach’s consistency in the Premier League, swift adaptation, work off the ball, duel wins, contributions in goals and assists, versatility and key status, adding that such quality gives him a chance for selection.
