Sheffield United could be set to lose one of their most influential players, with Sky Sports reporting that Coventry City are close to agreeing a deal to re-sign Gustavo Hamer.

The Dutch midfielder has just one year remaining on his contract at Bramall Lane, making this summer a crucial one for the Blades. Rather than risk losing one of their prized assets for nothing next year, United appear willing to listen to offers, and a return to the CBS Arena is now edging closer.

Hamer has been one of Sheffield United’s standout performers since arriving from Coventry in August 2023 following the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League. United paid around £15 million to secure his services after he had established himself as one of the Championship’s finest midfielders.

During his three seasons at Bramall Lane, Hamer has more than justified that price tag. Across all competitions, the 29-year-old has scored 21 goals and registered 26 assists, consistently proving to be the team’s creative heartbeat.

Whether operating as a central midfielder, an advanced number ten or in wider areas, Hamer has repeatedly delivered in big moments. His technical quality, vision and ability to produce moments of brilliance have often made the difference for Sheffield United.

It was Coventry who first brought Hamer to English football. He joined the Sky Blues from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in July 2020 and quickly became a fan favourite during his three-year spell in the West Midlands. His performances helped establish Coventry as genuine Championship contenders before Sheffield United swooped to bring him to Bramall Lane.

Now, just three years later, Coventry look set to bring one of their former heroes back home.

Losing Hamer Would Be A Huge Blow

Should the transfer be completed, Chris Wilder would lose one of the Championship’s most gifted footballers. Replacing Hamer would be no straightforward task, not simply because of his technical ability but because of the sheer volume of attacking contributions he provides from midfield.

His return of 47 goal involvements in three seasons underlines just how important he has been. Players capable of consistently contributing both goals and assists are rare in the Championship, and finding someone who can immediately replicate those numbers will be extremely tough.

The Blades have already added experience and some flair to their squad this summer, but losing a player of Hamer’s calibre would almost certainly force the club back into the market for another creative spark, and preferably one with an eye for goal.

Gustavo Hamer in the Spotlight

Despite the growing speculation surrounding his future, there has been little indication from Hamer himself that a move is imminent. And according to BBC Radio Sheffield’s Rob Staton, the midfielder was training as normal on Friday as Sheffield United continued their preparations for Saturday’s pre-season friendly against German side Bochum.

Staton reported that Hamer looked fully involved throughout the session and even produced a moment of quality during one of the small-sided games. After intercepting a pass, the Dutchman skipped away from an attempted challenge before calmly finishing the move. As he jogged back into position, one of his Sheffield United team-mates could be heard shouting “star boy”.

Whether he features against Bochum could now become one of the biggest talking points of the weekend. Clubs are often reluctant to risk players who are on the verge of completing transfers, although there has been no official indication from Sheffield United that Hamer will be withdrawn from the squad.

With just a couple of weeks remaining until the Championship season begins, the timing is far from ideal. Chris Wilder has repeatedly stressed the importance of building momentum during pre-season, and any late departure of such a key player would force the manager into a rapid rethink.
