Liverpool head into another pivotal Premier League fixture with a familiar theme resurfacing, uncertainty around fitness and availability. This time it centres on Florian Wirtz, and Arne Slot has offered little comfort ahead of the visit of West Ham United.
The Germany international was initially expected to miss only a brief spell after withdrawing in the warm up before Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest. What looked precautionary has evolved into something more troublesome, and at a stage of the season when rhythm matters most.
Speaking in his pre match press conference, Slot was direct. “Don’t expect Florian to be available.”
There was an acceptance that the situation had shifted quickly. “Every time when a player is not available it’s a disappointment and also something that I didn’t expect after last week.”
The greater concern lies in the absence of clarity. Asked about a potential return date, the Liverpool manager admitted, “At this moment of time… I honestly don’t know.”
For a side chasing consistency in the closing months of the campaign, that uncertainty complicates planning. Slot was keen to underline the level Wirtz had reached before the setback. “He played really, really, really, really well lately.”

That is not idle praise. Wirtz has become a structural pillar in this Liverpool side, linking midfield to attack and dictating tempo in advanced areas.
Against Nottingham Forest, despite securing a 1-0 victory thanks to Alexis Mac Allister’s late strike, Liverpool struggled for attacking control in the first half. The late reshuffle, prompted by Wirtz’s withdrawal, disrupted fluency.
Curtis Jones was asked to step in, while Dominik Szoboszlai operated in less familiar zones. The result was a fragmented build up and limited incision between the lines. Wirtz watched on in visible discomfort, and his absence was felt in the spaces he typically occupies.
Statistically, the influence is clear. In 25 Premier League appearances this season, 21 of them starts, Wirtz has scored four goals and supplied two assists. He averages 1.8 key passes per game and has created four big chances. Add to that 59.2 touches per match, and the picture sharpens. Much of Liverpool’s attacking architecture flows through him.
These are not numbers that scream headline grabbing dominance, yet they point to something subtler, control and connective play. For Slot’s system, that is essential.
Liverpool currently sit sixth on 45 points, level with Chelsea and hovering just outside the Champions League places. Fine margins will define the run in, and losing a primary creative outlet at this juncture presents a tactical puzzle.
Slot had initially suggested the issue “wasn’t very serious” in the immediate aftermath of the City Ground win. A week on, the tone has changed. Caution has replaced optimism.
West Ham arrive at Anfield sensing opportunity. Liverpool, meanwhile, must reconfigure. Whether that means greater responsibility for Mac Allister in deeper progression, or a reshaped role for Szoboszlai between the lines, remains to be seen.
What is certain is that Arne Slot, who delivered the Premier League title in his first season in 2024-25, now faces a different test. Sustaining momentum without Florian Wirtz may prove just as significant as any tactical tweak.
For Liverpool, the coming weeks are about resilience and adaptation. For Wirtz, recovery without a defined timeline. And for Slot, the challenge is clear, find solutions, quickly.
